Memorial Day weekend is also known as a vastly popular time for cookouts and BBQs. parties, drinking and soaking up the rays. Some of the best tips?
1. Be Prepared
If you’re heading to a cookout, you might be faced with a complete lack of healthy foods. The first route you can take is to bring your own healthy dish or snacks. Raw veggies and dip is a great place to start, but you can also get creative and try out any one of our healthy dishes in our Eating Well features.
2. Practice Moderation
If you forget to come prepared, or can’t be bothered to, remember to practice moderation. While a fistful of macaroni and cheese is not the end of the world, a whole casserole just won’t make you feel good! The same is also true for alcohol. Have a drink or two, but forgo binge drinking. Not only do the calories add up, but you don’t want to waste any of your holiday being hungover now, do you?
3. Stay Active (and Distracted)
Don’t think this is a time to totally give up on the gym and staying active. Even if all you can manage is a 30 minute jog, playing frisbee, or doggy paddling at the lake, it will not only burn calories but keep you distracted from stress and snacking!
4. Plan Something Exciting
Make sure your trip is fulfilled by planning something exciting. I know I’m heading up to New England, so I will certainly plan a hiking trip to spend one of my days. If you’re going to the beach, plan on a snorkeling trip or something similar.
5. Pace Yourself
We all want to do everything and be everywhere, but this will only run you down. You don’t want to feel like you need a vacation after a vacation! Come back to work refreshed.
One great way to make sure you feel refreshed? Getting adequate sleep! Shoot for a full 8-10 every night. There’s a reason they call it beauty sleep after all…
7. Hydrate Yourself
Sometimes when you’re too busy running around and having fun, it can be a lot harder to remember to hydrate. Make sure you’re carrying around a water bottle with you at all times.
8. Don’t Forget About Sun Protection!
Finally, sitting in the office 5 days a week makes us crave the sun. No doubt about it, but make sure not too OD on it. Always wear sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat and wear sunglasses. Not only do they look cool, but they protect your precious eyes. Seek shade when you can, as well.
One final note, we’ve noticed that we’ve hear of more and more cases of Lyme disease cropping up here and there. If you are heading out into the woods or tall brush, make sure to wear long pants and long sleeves. Also, make sure to wear full coverage shoes and always perform a tick check when you get home!
